Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. In this weekly film guide, I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

WIDE RELEASES

  • Star Trek Beyond – More treks into space…and beyond!
Directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 3-6)
Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Idris Elba

The new Star Trek series has eluded me for no good reason. Every trailer I’ve seen look interesting and fun. I’ve heard mostly great things about the movies. I just also seem to have missed the boat. I really want to catch up though, especially since Chris Pine has become more of a must-see for me in recent years for his more comedic roles. Justin Lin has taken over since J.J. Abrams scored the latest Star Wars movie, and his slick action sensibilities would likely translate well to this movie. It’s also interesting how the diversity of The Fast and Furious movies reflects her in the Star Trek series too. That cast is awesome. It will be a very sad experience though to watch this after Anton Yelchin’s tragic passing. It still doesn’t feel real.

  • Ice Age: Collision Course– The rag tag team of prehistoric animals must prevent a meteor strike.
Directed by Mike Thurmeier, Galen T. Chu (debut!)
Starring Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo
I honestly didn’t know this was even coming out til earlier this week. I hadn’t heard a word about it. And I’m probably going to just continue to not worry about it. But hey if your kids are already over The Secret Life of Pets then here you go!
  • Lights Out– A family is haunted by a dark presence over generations.
Directed by David F. Sandberg (debut!)
Starring Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Maria Bello
This actually looks pretty good. I jumped about every other scene during the trailer, so it’s definitely got that down. I unfortunately still haven’t seen The Conjuring 2 yet, so my horror movie in theaters craving has not been satiated at all in recent months. This seems worth checking out, especially with all the positive reviews coming in, including our own review by Nate. Theresa Palmer joins the ranks of young actresses fulfilling their horror movie duty, but fortunately for her this looks like it’s actually good!

    LIMITED RELEASES

  • Absolutely Fabulous– The duo from the BBC show return for a full length feature.
    Directed by Mandie Fletcher
Starring Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Jane Horrocks
I’ve never seen the television series but I know it has a cult following that swear by it. It does seem like something I’d enjoy and the trailer even makes me think I’d enjoy the movie with previous knowledge of the characters. It’s all about the fashion/entertainment industry and having some fun with making fun of it. There’s a slew of cameos in the trailer alone. I’m sure if you’re a fan of the show this is a must-see.
