JAMES WAN

I’m a huge fan of director James Wan after having the pants scared off of me when his film Insidious was released. Wan has been working for a while but it wasn’t until that movie that I really connected with what he was all about. Since that film, he has continued to grow as a director and hone his skills. In The Conjuring 2, Wan branches out into new territory, trying new camera tricks that help keep this movie feeling fresh while still staying true to his favorite aesthetic shots from the past. He continues to experiment while crafting his signature style. He’s the kind of director that you can tell not only that he gives a shit about what he’s doing, but also that he enjoys it. His creativity and fun show in the film and it really sucked me in as an audience member.

CUTEST GHOSTHUNTERS EVER

Wan has went on record saying that he wanted to pay proper respects to the two lead subjects of the film series: Real-life ghosthunters Ed & Lorraine Warren. Played with care by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, this latest movie puts the couple front and center for the spooky drama that unfolds, mainly focusing on the couple’s relationship. What I love the most about the portrayal of the couple in this film is how much emphasis is placed on their actual partnership. They are loving equals that cherish each other and everything they give to their union. You might be surprised at how immensely heartfelt The Conjuring 2 is thanks to these two.

THE YOUNGER ACTORS

One of Wan’s greatest assets in all of his films are the performances. Okay so maybe not Cary Elwes fading Shakespearean turn in Saw but both Insidious and The Conjuring featured a lot of very memorable performances that helped to elevate the films. In this latest installment, the younger members of the haunted family are great actors, especially the central afflicted character played by Madison Wolfe. I haven’t seen this girl in anything before but she totally sells her tortured character. Her range is incredible and she pulls off scenes that would rival anything featuring Linda Blair in The Exorcist.

IT’S SCARY!

As a horror fan, it’s rare that I’m actually scared by films in the genre. I don’t know what that says about me as a person but it does make the movie moments that DO scare me taste all the sweeter. The Conjuring 2 isn’t as heat-racing as its predecessor but it certainly has some frightening moments that are sure to have you clutching the arm rest. What better way to beat the summer heat than with a chill down your spine?
