Netflix Instant Watch Pick

The Selfish Giant

Who’s in it?
Conner Chapman, Shaun Thomas, Sean Gilder, Ian Burfield, Lorrainne Ashbourne, Siobhan Finneran

What’s it about?
“THE SELFISH GIANT is a contemporary fable about 13 year old Arbor (Conner Chapman) and his best friend Swifty (Shaun Thomas). Excluded from school and outsiders in their own neighborhood, the two boys meet Kitten (Sean Gilder), a local scrapdealer – the Selfish Giant. They begin collecting scrap metal for him using a horse and cart. Swifty has a natural gift with horses while Arbor emulates Kitten – keen to impress him and make some money. However, Kitten favors Swifty, leaving Arbor feeling hurt and excluded, driving a wedge between the boys. Arbor becomes increasingly greedy and exploitative, becoming more like Kitten. Tensions build, leading to a tragic event, which transforms them all.” – Rotten Tomatoes

Nate’s Two Cents?
This was just a random Netflix pick I just finished watching and man is it great. It’s a tale about two best friends who scrap for local scrap dealer, Kitten. Over the course of the film the boys, Arbor and Swifty, slowly drift apart. The film leads up to a morbid and depressing climax that truly show the closeness of the boys’ friendship and what it meant. I highly recommend checking this one out and it is by far one of the best random watches I have ever seen on Netflix. Do yourself a favor and give it a shot!

In The Heart of the Sea

“In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.” – Warner Bros

Macbeth

“Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literature’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn Scotland.” – Rotten Tomatoes
