For pretty much as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with movies, TV and pop culture in general. So what, right? This is a movie site, of course we love movies. So why mention it? Well, like it or not, I’ll be chronicling my pop culture obsessions through the years every month for the next year or so, and I wanted to get the basics out of the way.

You may still be wondering, what’s the deal? Why the focus on old pop-culture obsessions? Maybe I want to pay my respects to past interests. Perhaps I just need to connect the dots and find out why I love the things I love. In any case, it’s happening. And, to be clear, I’m still quite obsessed with everything I’ll be featuring.

Where to start? Well, the first film I remember watching is The Chipmunk Adventure. In a nutshell, I snuck out of my crib to watch it with my dad one night. I remember my mom was camping out on the floor, trying to catch me in the act of escaping. This probably would have been late ‘87 or ‘88 and I would have been three or so. Why my dad was watching The Chipmunk Adventure, I don’t know. Furthermore, why he didn’t send me back to bed is a mystery as well, especially since my mom was actively trying to catch me.

As I got older, I started going to the movies. I know that I saw The Addams Family in a theater the year it was released. It was 1991 and I was six years old. All I can really remember is Thing, the disembodied hand, scittering around on the floor. I definitely developed a crush on Christina Ricci, however. I recently found a drawing I did from when I was a kid. It was April of 1992 and it looks like I was hoping to see both Beethoven and Fern Gully (see below). They had both just been released in theaters. I don’t know that I actually went to see either of those, but I know for a fact that I saw Jurassic Park the next year. Much more to come on that film and its franchise later in the series.

So now that the generalities are out of the way, I’m excited to share my obsessions with everyone. First up, where probably every modern film fan starts: Disney. Tune in next month.

What’s the first film you remember watching? Do you remember the first movie you saw in a theater?
