12.18.1Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Sisters – Two adult sisters throw a party at their parents’ house one last time.
Directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect)
Starring Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Ike Barinholtz
I wish I was more excited for this. I definitely want to see it because, duh, Tina and Amy. They’re basically two of my idols and funniest women out there. The trailer just looks kind of corny with a lot of easy physical comedy and weak jokes. I’m really hoping there’s more to it than that. And when you bring these two together I expect comedic gold, dammit! The reviews are pretty in the middle, leaning towards positive so I’ll go in with an open mind and hope for the best.
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens – The epic space saga continues with old favorites and new heroes and take on a new threat.
Directed by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Super 8)
Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver
Star Wars is probably my biggest film blind spot. I haven’t seen any of these movies (I have seen Spaceballs though) but even I think the trailer looks pretty rad. I want to know what’s going on and get in on the fun with this installment than I ever worried about with the older movies. I’m not sure how I was left out of the dark with these movies as a child but here I am. Good news is Lindsay and I are both going to cure what ails us and watch all of the Star Wars movies and talk about them on a new podcast, so look out for that!
  • Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip – Also this. I can’t.

  • Son of Saul – A Holocaust prisoner who’s tasked with burning bodies finds the body of who he’s sure is his own son.
    Directed by László Nemes
Starring Géza Röhrig, Levente Molnár, Urs Rechn
Oscar fans – this is a movie to see as I’m pretty sure it’s a frontrunner for Best Foreign Picture. It’s received amazing acclaim for what must be rough subject matter. There’s so many films about the Holocaust but there always seems to be new, interesting ways to tackle this atrocity. I am interested in how personal this story sounds. Not sure how readily available it will be theatrically but it seems worth seeking out if it’s near you and you’re not previously engaged in Star Wars.
