The Best on DVD & BluRay

150529-san-andreas-movie

San Andreas

Who’s in it?
Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Paul Giamatti

What’s it about?
“In the aftermath of a massive earthquake in California, a rescue-chopper pilot makes a dangerous journey with his ex-wife across the state in order to rescue his daughter.” – IMDB

Nate’s Two Cents?
Probably the weakest of the releases that are coming out this week in my opinion. The problem with most disaster movies is that they have all these really cool scenes of destruction and chaos, but then the rest of the story is a bit interchangeable with any other movie of its kind. I wouldn’t go out and buy this release but it’s worth a redbox rental if you want to see metropolis annihilation and “The Rock’s” sweet muscled self flying helicopters.

Tomorrowland

Who’s in it?
George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Britt Robertson, Tim McGraw, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer

What’s it about?
“From Disney comes two-time Oscar (R) winner Brad Bird’s riveting, mystery adventure “Tomorrowland,” starring Academy Award (R) winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world-and them-forever. Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, “Tomorrowland” promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of.” – Walt Disney

Nate’s Two Cents?
It’s been 5 months since I saw Tomorrowland in theatres and honestly I don’t remember whether I particularly liked it or not. I know it was a box office bomb for Disney, but I don’t recall it being an awful movie. I think the movie had some amazing scenes and effects, but storywise I remember feeling like something was missing and that I wanted more out of the story. I plan on giving this release another watch for sure. Sometimes a second viewing can open your eyes to new perspectives.

Dope

Who’s in it?
Rakim Mayers, Shameik Moore, Blake Anderson, Bruce Beatty, De’aundre Bonds, Kiersey Clemons, Tony Revolori

What’s it about?
“A critical hit and audience favorite out of the Sundance Film Festival, in DOPE, Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.” – Open Road

Nate’s Two Cents?
I honestly would put this on my top movies of the year. The whole idea around the movie is perfect, plus the music is pretty rad as well. It has the story of urban youth getting into a dangerous situation, but the fact that the main cast are the outsiders gives it a different twist. The main character, Malcolm, and his friends are obsessed with the early 90’s era and hip hop, which offer a lot of nostalgic moments for people who grew up during the 90’s to pick up on. I highly recommend this release and if you haven’t seen it, then pick up a copy this week. You won’t regret it!

Justified Complete Series

“U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is a modern day 19th century-style lawman, enforcing his brand of justice in a way that puts a target on his back with criminals and places him at odds with his bosses in the Marshal service. That conflict results in a reassignment for Givens to the U.S. District covering the town where he grew up. He is an anachronism – a tough, soft spoken gentleman who finds his quarry fascinating, but never gives an inch. Dig under his placid skin and you’ll find an angry man who grew up hard in rural Kentucky, with an outlaw father, who knows a lot more about who he doesn’t want to be than who he really is” – FX
