Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Hot Pursuit  – A high-strung cop has to protect and transport to trial a witness who’s husband is involved in the drug trade. There will be wackiness.
Directed by Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, 27 Dresses)
Starring Reese Witherspoon, Sofía Vergara, Matthew Del Negro
This looks like it’s trying to channel the successes of The Heat into another female buddy comedy, something that we need to see in theaters more often. Unfortunately, this looks like a rather lame iteration. I’m not sure if it’s bad bad or just very mediocre. One of my favorite Film Drunk features, where review snippets are strung together to provide a film synopsis definitely doesn’t inspire confidence. Seem like such a waste of the two leading ladies who I’m sure could do a great job with the right script.
  • The D Train  – A man attempts to draw in attendees to the high school reunion he’s planning by convincing the most popular guy from his class to attend.
Written & directed by Andrew Mogel & Jarrad Paul (previously wrote Yes Man together)
Starring Jack Black, James Marsden, Kathryn Hahn, Jeffrey Tambor
This movie looks kind of weird. The trailer is a very oddball mix of random elements that don’t quite gel, but I think it might just be doing a horrible job of selling this movie. The plot is so damn strange that it has a dark comedy vibe to me, but it’s being sold as more straightforward. I’ve actually read a lot of surprisingly good feedback, so this is one I would watch at home if only to satisfy my curiosity.

guide2

  • Maggie – This latest zombie movie takes a new angle, by exploring a father taking care of his daughter as her infection takes over.
Directed by  Henry Hobson (directorial debut!)
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abigail Breslin, Joely Richardson
Despite the zombie overload of the past few years, filmmakers are still trying to find fresh angles on the genre. This is a very dramatic rendition of the zombie virus. Schwarzenegger goes out of his usual style in this role, but that could be a refreshing change up. There’s not enough for me to worry about this, but reviews have been down the middle or positive, so it doesn’t seem terrible if you’re looking for a Video On Demand option.
