In an attempt to stick to our movie-related New Years resolutions, Jess and I plan to keep a weekly record of our progress towards our goal. Jess was on vacation last week so here is the updated look at the past two Resolution weeks. You can also check out our initial resolutions post here.

My big goal this year is to watch three types of movies a week:

  • 1 New Movie (anything that has come out in the last 3-4 months)
  • 1 Movie From My Netflix Queue (it has to be from the list I cemented in stone at the beginning of 2014 to count)
  • 1 Movie I’ve Been Meaning to Rewatch

Lets take a look at what was watched this past week.

My movie watching was derailed both of these weeks because of both getting ready for and going on vacation. I managed to do a re-watch each week, but I’m going to do double duty the next few weeks to catch up!

Re-watched:

  • Bridget Jones’s Diary – After watching three Colin Firth movies within the course of 2 weeks, I decided to parlay that kick into a re-watch I’ve been meaning to do for a long time now. I’d only seen this once awhile ago, but on a re-watch I know for sure that I love this movie. Definitely one of my favorite romantic comedies.
  • Blood Simple – After reading Mette’s Started From the Bottom post, I really wanted to go back and give this another watch. I realized that besides from a few key scenes (the burial, the ending) I really didn’t actually remember this very well. The affair was more soapy than I recalled, but still a very solid movie. That ending sequence might be one of the Coen’s best.

TRANCE- FILM REVIEW

New Movies:

  • The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – I just wasn’t feeling it. I’m a fan of the rest of the trilogy but this one felt off. It looks over stylized and rushed.
  • White Bird in a Blizzard  – What a snoozefest. For a movie about the disappearance of a mother and her daughter’s sexual awakening I could not have cared less. Also: Eva Green overacts the hell out of this one.

Re-watched:

  • Trance – I recapture a fondness for this film every time I rewatch it. The plot is very twisty and fun and it always feels good watching a Boyle film.
  • St. Elmo’s Fire – I couldn’t remember the last time I had actually watched all of this and now I remember why. Good gravy this movie is so drenched in drama it’s absurd. This flick should stay in the 80s and never resurface.

Off the Queue:

  • Dirty Pretty Things – Another movie with interseting themes but boring execution. It never quite lived up to it’s scintillating title.
  • Frank – Very unique, odd and interesting little film. I can’t really think of another film to compare it to, which is a good thing!
