#05 /Captain America: Winter Soldier

This film was my personal favorite of last year, so I’m glad it has a place in this Top 5. There was a lot to like with this Marvel flick. Chris Evans came into his own as Captain America and both the returning characters and actors and the new kids did great work. It was a great self-contained story about a sinister threat within S.H.I.E.L.D. but it was also filled with call-backs to previous in-universe films and foreshadowed elements to come (which is good, considering Marvel’s insane slate of upcoming films). In terms of storytelling I think it upped the bar for not only Marvel’s films but comic book films in general. You can also look forward to this flick’s directors – the Russo brothers – helming Captain America 3: Civil War.

#04 / Kick-Ass

What I love about Kick-Ass is how unconventional a hero its title character is; an average high school kid who questions why he can’t be a superhero like those he reads comic books about. The premise makes for a funny but also gritty, brutal take on the genre. Hit Girl will go down in recent movie history as a truly fun, fierce icon and, again, unlike any superhero we’ve seen recently. The action and humor only seek to enhance and emphasize the heart and the heroism of this film. – Sara

#03 / X-Men: Days of Future Past

Whether you’re new to the Marvel Universe or a die-hard fanboy (or fangirl) you got to admit that Days of Future Past is a fun movie. Based on the iconic comic story arc of the same name, X-Men: DOFP bridges the gap between the original X-Men trilogy and the reboot. The amount of Superhero movies have grown exponentially in the last 5 years but X-Men:DOFP definitely holds its own in this category. – Marc

#02 / Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy is a superhero film filled with heroes that you didn’t know were some of your favorite of all time. After watching Guardians and learning about these characters and their stories, it is hard to not feel like they are more human than a lot of the bigger named superheroes. And some of them aren’t even human. This just goes to show that a great story and characters is sometimes all a movie really needs. Thankfully, Guardians of the Galaxy has this and a lot of charm, making it one of the best superhero films of the last five years. – Rob

#01 / The Avengers

The title itself illustrates why this is the best superhero movie of the last 5 years – or any amount of years, to be honest. The Avengers – also known as the “dream team” – are Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye. And on top of all that, we have Loki. Do I really need to explain? – Mette
