Whiplash-Movie
In an attempt to stick to our movie-related New Years resolutions, Jess and I plan to keep an weekly record of our progress towards our goal. See if we hit our goal this week and what movies we watched. You can also check out our initial resolutions post here.

My big goal this year is to watch three types of movies a week:

  • 1 New Movie (anything that has come out in the last 3-4 months)
  • 1 Movie From My Netflix Queue (it has to be from the list I cemented in stone at the beginning of 2014 to count)
  • 1 Movie I’ve Been Meaning to Rewatch

Lets take a look at what was watched this past week.

New Movies:

  • 88 – I watched this straight to Netflix release because it stars Katherine Isabelle who I thought was awesome in American Mary. This revenge tale is told from a split timeline, and although there’s parts that work well, it’s overall very average.

Re-watched:

  • Jerry Maguire – I haven’t seen this since I was a kid, and I certainly got way more out of it now. Tom Cruise is perfect here and it’s just a really good, warm watch. I like how they handle his relationship with Renée Zellweger where it’s realistic but has that big romantic moment.

Off the Queue:

  • Frances Ha – A really quick, cute watch. It’s about a 20-something shuffling around NYC trying to get her shit together. That could get annoying, but Greta Gerwig is so damn likable that it worked for me. She’s constantly picking the wrong life path or spontaneously making terrible decisions or saying the wrong thing so that I couldn’t stop shaking my head, but it kept a lighthearted tone.

New Movies:

  • Whiplash – I loved the energy and pacing of this indie gem. Very glad to see it getting some attention this awards season.

Re-watched:

  • Groundhog Day – I saw this at the Alamo Drafthouse for their ‘feast’ line up which included three pies served over the course of the film. It was a great way to experience this old favorite.

Off the Queue:

  • The Act of Killing – Quite surreal for a documentary but powerful nonetheless. One of the most unique cinematic experiences to come from a documentary ever.
