02.06.1  Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Jupiter Ascending – It’s sad to me that this movie has been a joke since day one it feels like. Everyone loves to bitch that nothing original comes out and then when a science fiction movie that’s not based on a book or comic does arrive in theaters everyone is so quick to write it off. Yeah, I get that this looks a bit out there and the make up more than a bit funny, but give movies a chance! The Wachowskis already had a very divisive epic recently in Cloud Atlas but I was a big fan of it and totally trust in their abilities to put amazing visuals to screen. I might not be running out to theaters to see this, but I’m also not dismissing it.
  • Seventh Son – Why pit this fantasy movie against a science fiction movie in the same weekend? What little audience either film will have will be even more split. Well, besides the fact that this is the definition of being dumped in the first few weeks of the year. This has been pushed back for two years and now they’re finally just going to toss it out there on a random weekend. This movie is based on a book called The Spook’s Apprentice (wonder why they changed that title?) and features a lot of Julianne Moore chewing up scenery. Why do you do this Moore and Jeff Bridges?
  • The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water – Nothing much to say here. I’m just going to put out there that this is the widest release of the week.

  • The Voices – This is a pitch black comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as a man who’s talks to his pets and they happen to talk back. His cat (they really are evil) drives him to become a serial killer while his dog (they really are the best) tries to be his voice of reason. Anna Kendrick plays his completely oblivious new girlfriend and Gemma Arterton plays a victim of his who continues to talk to him from the dead. It certainly looks cuckoo but a fun cuckoo.
    Playing in select theaters.
