01.16.1  Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Blackhat – Hey, it’s Michael Mannuary! This movie is about a convicted hacker played by the impossibly good looking Chris Hemsworth, who is taken out of prison to help the government stop a criminal from doing computer crimes (I’m well versed in this sort of thing). I can only assume they are stopping a hacking of a movie studio before amazingly embarrassing emails are released. Or taking down the economy or something. This just looks too serious to be fun, and too over-the-top to be taken seriously.
  • Paddington – Apparently this movie is delightful. I can’t quite get past a bear riding a bathtub down a staircase. But if you have children or love kid’s movies this seems like a pretty great one if all the high praise is to be believed. I read some Paddington books as a child and all I can remember is that he liked marmalade so I had a teeny bit of nostalgia when they brought it up in the trailer, but otherwise this just doesn’t seem to be for me. Enjoy though!
  • The Wedding Ringer – Kevin Hart may be hitting a wall for me with this one. I’m not sure if it’s this HItch-ish terrible idea for a movie, or that one of my least favorite working actors Josh Gad is co-starring. I wish this Gad-thing would just stop. Not that I’ve even see any of Hart’s recent comedies, but I think it’s cool his career has taken off. Well anyways, in this he plays a man hired to be Gad’s Best Man since Gad has no friends I guess. Gad is marrying the girl from The Big Bang Theory. Forget this shit, I’d rather just watch I Love You Man.
  • Also, American Sniper expands, but I wouldn’t recommend seeing it. Lindsay & I both had gigantic issues with not only the story but the filmmaking and it’s disheartening to see it accumulate so many Oscar nominations. A full review will be up this weekend.

  • Still Alice – Damn, just that trailer made me feel a little emotional. Maybe I am projecting my mother into this scenario, but this seems like it will definitely hit me hard. I’ve heard it’s a so-so movie with some great performances and I’ve also heard over and over that Julianne Moore isn’t as deserving of what seems to her sure win. I love Moore, and while the idea of receiving a “make up” award is crummy (especially if she’s not actually better than the perfect Rosamund Pike), it seems wrong that she’s always nominated and never a winner. I just want to watch this so I can decide on my own how deserving or not she might be for her performance.
    Playing in select theaters.
