01.09.1Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Taken 3 – January is sloooow. Last week I didn’t put together a film guide because the only film to write about was The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death. This week isn’t much better unless you’re taking it as an opportunity to catch up on some December films or partake in our of the expanding movies (see below). Liam Neeson is out here making money though. Last year he was in three live action and two animated films, which grossed $942 million (if you want to narrow it down to three live action films he was a main star in, it’s still $361 million). You can see why studios are willing to put out anything that stars the guy. He’s very bankable and Taken has been ridiculously successful, the second one (which was universally considered lesser than the first) made more money.  So yes, I get why this is out and it’s sure to clean up considering this dead movie month. I just have no interest in it.
  • Also, Inherent Vice and Selma both expand, so you can check those out.

  • Predestination – This is a re-team of the Spierig brothers and the always enjoyable Ethan Hawke, who previously worked together on Daybreakers (that vampire movie that no one seemed overly positive about). This time they’re making a time travel action movie based on a short story that is supposed to be very good. And the response to this movie has been quite positive. It’s supposed to be a bit of a mind-bender with an interesting sci-fi premise. The fact that it’s being dumped in January to a very limited release might be cause for concern, but it doesn’t mean that it will stink by any means. In fact I’d like to check it out at some point.
Playing in select theaters and available through Video on Demand.
