11.7.14.3 Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Big Hero 6 – So people totally lost their shit when the teaser for this movie came out. Like, grown adults in theaters seated for movies aimed at a much older audience than Big Hero 6 laughed their ass off at this teaser. It was cute and all… I mean it was fine. Nothing to laugh your ass off at in my humble opinion. It kind of immediately made me question this movie and why I wasn’t in this group of people who thought it was the most adorable thing they’d seen recently. Anyways, if you love animated kids movie go ahead and see it. I’ll probably not.
  • Interstellar – Christopher Nolan has put himself in a position where anything he does is going to have some crazy expectations placed upon him. He makes movies that feel bigger than just action movies. He’s made one of the best superhero franchises ever with a high level of craft. He’s made one of the most original films of recent years. It’s a lot of pressure to deliver, even if there are certainly people with their criticisms, fairly enough. Then you put out a movie like Interstellar which is so in line with what we’ve seen from him before, this large scale epic action, science fiction film. I find myself completely downplaying my expectations here. I want to love it, but I’m just not feeling the same amount of pumped up-ness that I had with Inception. The first trailer I got some legitimate shivers, the second had me like “oh, okay what’s this all about?”. I am going into this with a completely open mind, ready to see what Nolan has up his sleeve this time.

  • The Theory of Everything – Oscar watch over here – this one is a definite contender (for a nominee at least). It’s an incredible real life story with amazing performances (from what everyone says). Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones star as Stephen Hawking and his first wife Jane, in a movie all about their relationship and living with his ALS. Both have been getting very high praise, but I’m especially excited about Jones who I’ve really loved since Like Crazy. I think she’s so fantastic and has something different about her. This looks like a legitimate weepie and I am fully prepared to shed some tears here. It also looks to just be a genuinely good movie, so I’m excited to check this out.
    Opening in select theaters.
  • Why Don’t You Play In Hell – This movie looks so batshit and fun. It’s about a film crew who film a real life yakuza battle as part of their movie. The trailer has this crazy Kill Bill on acid vibe that you can’t help but want to see it. It seems to be as much an ode to fighting movies as it is to movies in general, so I expect a lot of interesting filmmaking to be on display. I just hope it’s as awesome as I think it will be!
