GoneGirl

If you have been living under a rock for the past few months, you may have missed the buzz about Gone Girl. It started with the tremendously popular book written by Gillian Flynn that looks at a marriage gone wrong as husband Nick Dunne is suddenly suspected of something sinister once his beautiful wife Amy goes missing. It starts simple enough but from there readers are treated to a winding road of mystery, intrigue and drama. Then movie fans had something to get excited about once David Fincher was set to direct the film adaptation.

In case you missed it, below you can see the film’s trailer and synopsis:

“GONE GIRL – directed by David Fincher and based upon the global bestseller by Gillian Flynn – unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his beautiful wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?”

I’ve been freaking out about Gone Girl and its seems I’m not alone. The movie brought in Fincher’s highest opening weekend box office numbers at $38 million and critics have been greeting the film with praise for its direction and cast.

I listed all of my spoiler-free thoughts in my full review which you can read here. Here’s a snippet:

“Everything in the movie is dirty and foreboding and a little trashy but it works. The story is filled with outlandish and salacious moments but Flynn creates a subtext within the madness that is grounded in some ugly truths. A well set “twist” isn’t why the book is so popular. It’s what we can understand about the characters. There are layers below the surface of this married couple that we get to know superficially at first and then intimately as we follow them down the rabbit hole. I’d like to dig a little deeper here but I feel it would be best discussed in time. I’ll just say that it is good storytelling destined to result in even better discussion.” – [FULL REVIEW]
