9.27.1 Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • The Boxtrolls – This is the latest film by the studio that produced the other stop motion animated movies Coraline and ParaNorman. It’s based on the book Here Be Monsters!, which incidentally is a much cuter title. It looks decent. Kinda cute with the talent behind the production to make it seem worth watching. Stop motion just looks cooler (and creepier). Can’t say I’ll be making a trip to the movies for it though since there’s just too much else to see. Side note: why couldn’t Gone Girl just come out this weekend so we didn’t have to wait ONE MORE WEEK?!
  • The Equalizer – So this is like the commercialized version of Taxi Driver, right? Denzel Washington plays a (less psychotic) vigilante of sorts who takes injustices into his own hands and rescues a prostitute (is Chloe Moretz the new Jodie Foster?) from her pimps. This takes it one step further by having his actions lead him into some serious crime network shit when he nabs the wrong guys. It looks… okay. Nothing really striking except checking out the new Denzel flick. I’m sure I’ll wait for it to hit cable if reviews are decent.

guide2

  • White Bird in a Blizzard – Shailene Woodley and Eva Green play mother and daughter in this drama/thriller about the mother’s disappearance. Eva Green looks crazy! It’s the 80’s apparently! Shailene has sex with Thomas Jane who’s the detective on the missing person’s case! Christopher Meloni looks hella weird! Somehow director Gregg Araki made both the amazing Mysterious Skin and the seriously WTF Smiley Face! Color me intrigued. There’s some trippy looking scenes going on. Are they dreams or what? I want to know, I think.
Now on video on demand and opening in select theaters October 24th.
