Super Big Movie New Release

RottenTomatoes: 73% | IMDB: 6.6

What’s it about?
A married couple with a newborn accidentally moves into a house next to a frat. A turf war between the two ensues after the married couple asks the college kids to “keep the volume down.” This allows for the movie to comment on the generation gap, gender differences, long-term relationships, and growing older.

Recommend it?
Yep! It’s one of those movies you can study and think about, or just turn your brain off and laugh.

Was it any good?
I didn’t like it as much as the best of the Judd Apatow-Seth Rogen family of films, but it’s certainly worth a watch. The movie is very funny and has a surprising amount to say. I particularly liked Rose Byrne’s character being just as immature and irresponsible as Seth Rogen’s, and then wondering why women can’t act that way too?

Best Movie Starring a Twilight Alum

RottenTomatoes: 66% | IMDB: 6.7

What’s it about?
10 years after the economic collapse of Australia (and I guess the world?), Guy Pearce has his car stolen, which is his only possession. He enlists the help of Robert Pattinson, who is a brother of one of the thieves, to find the car. The entire movie, Guy Pearce is looking for the car while driving another car he stole.

Recommend it?
Maybe… there’s a lot to like, but it’s a tough sit.

If his car is his only possession, and after it’s stolen he immediately gets another one, why does he care?
That’s what I was wondering the whole time! Eventually, the reason is revealed and it’s a pretty good one, but it comes in the last minute and by then I’ve been distracted the entire movie.
There’s a lot of cool stuff in this movie, but it’s very schizophrenic. The theft of the car in the first scene would make an excellent short film, and Guy Pearce gives an awesome performance. Then it grinds to a halt. Every now and then the film picks up again, and when it does it’s great. The soundtrack is creepy, the cinematography looks beautiful, and then the movie will stop. You just have to wait for it to get going again. If you’re willing to put up with that type of pacing, go for it!

Best Bad Movie I Didn’t See, But Really Wanted To

RottenTomatoes 55% | IMDB 6.3

What’s it about?
From IMDB, “On a road trip, Nic and two friends are drawn to an isolated area by a computer genius. When everything suddenly goes dark, Nic regains consciousness – only to find himself in a waking nightmare.”

Why haven’t you seen this movie?
It didn’t last all that long in the theaters, and there was a lot of competition. That being said, it sounds intriguing enough to check out. The fact that it’s a low-budget movie that ran the festival circuit helps as well.

Why has this movie received poor reviews?
Most seem to point to the story, saying that it’s a bit underwhelming. Apparently the visuals are pretty cool. I’d be willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt!
