8.21.2 Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

wide

  • Sin City: A Dame To Kill For – This sequel looks like it has a lot in common with 300: Rise of An Empire which just came out earlier this year (anyone remember that?). Both of their original films felt incredibly fresh and uniquely styled at the time. They also are way too delayed for maximum impact. Not to mention both of them feature Eva Green. Actually in both instances, it seems like she is the main hook to watching either film. Not to say this looks bad (and it certainly looks better than the second 300). It just might be a little too late for people to be that excited. Also, in the last almost decade since it came out, there’s been plenty of other movies that use graphic novel styles so this doesn’t feel quite as interesting. However, it does seem like more of the same so it should at least be worth a watch if you’re a fan of Sin City.
  • When The Game Stands Tall – Sports movies like this just look a bit too corny. That also doesn’t seem to prevent sports fans from relating and enjoying them. This one in particular is about a real life high school team (and get this, they’re not from Texas) who went on a 151-game winning streak and then must overcome some kind of hardship when the streak is broken. I’m sure the coach gives an awesome speech and the team rallies together to win again. I’ll definitely pass on this one and instead recommend you check out the doc Undefeated instead.
  • If I Stay – There always seems to be half of me that wants to embrace the younger me and give these teen movies designed to make you cry a chance. The other half just wants to read the Wikipedia synopsis and roll my eyes. With this one I might end up doing both. The concept is pretty cringe-worthy to start – with a girl caught in limbo deciding whether to pass on with her family after a fatal accident or stay alive and deal with the pain. Oh gosh, it just sounds like a tailor-made tearjerker. I do love Chloe Moretz though, so I could see myself caring just a bit because it’s her. Regardless, if I ever do catch this it will probably be on cable… when nothing else is on.

  • The One I Love – I am very intrigued by this film. It’s supposed to be a romantic comedy with an interesting twist that seems genre-bending. I really like the trailer which gives you just a bit of weirdness without telling you much of anything. It’s about a couple attempting to rehab their relationship on an out of the ordinary couple’s retreat. I’ve heard a lot of positive things so I’m up for this supposedly unique rom-com.

Playing in select theaters and available on demand.
