Marion-Ravenwood

10. Marion Ravenwood Played by Karen Allen

Marion is sort of the female Indiana Jones if you think about it. Her father was Indy’s mentor Abner Ravenwood (it’s slightly unbelievable that the man that inspired Indiana Jones was named Abner). Marion’s great because she’s not a damsel in distress. She likes adventures and treasure and she’s not afraid to give someone a knuckle sandwich. Indy even married her, although that may be something that Indy fans would like to forget, along with the rest of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Matt-Hooper

9. Matt Hooper Played by Richard Dreyfuss

Matt Hooper is a marine biologist, oceanographer and a member of the trio that takes on Spielberg’s shark in Jaws. A good way to describe Hooper is that he’s the opposite of Quint (Robert Shaw). Quint is old, experienced, and street smart and Hooper is young and more scientific minded. At the end of the day, Hooper’s a good guy, and forms a bond with Chief Brody (Roy Scheider).

Quint

8. Quint Played by Robert Shaw

Quint is the grizzled, scarred-up old fisherman from Spielberg’s Jaws. He survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. He’s so tough, he can scrape his fingernails on a chalkboard for like, 10 seconds and not even flinch. He’s such an intense character and his hunt for the shark is sort of a personal one, having lived through the gruesome shark attacks after the Indianapolis went down.

Captain-Miller

7. Captain Miller Played by Tom Hanks

Captain Miller is such a tragic hero. In fact, I’m not sure which character on this list is sadder, Miller or Jaws’ Quint. Miller has a working class atmosphere about him (it’s revealed that he’s a teacher back home in one pivotal scene in the movie) and he’s a good man despite the terrible war he’s in. His men respect him and he’s the emotional center of the film. Truly one of Spielberg’s most human characters.

ET

6. E.T. Voiced by Pat Welsh

E.T. is an alien from the planet Brodo Asogi (really, look it up). He likes beer, Reese’s Pieces, and bringing stuff back to life. What I like most about E.T. is that he’s just a good guy, erm, entity. He was there for Elliott and showed him that those that we love will always be in our hearts.
