As a beer lover, I often find myself selecting out a brew to fit my mood. And as a movie lover, most of the time the two go hand in hand. So I decided to share some pairings of film and beer that I think go great together. Take a look at my pick of the month and hopefully you will enjoy it.
Blackwing Lager is Union Brewing’s newest canned release. It is a lager made with roasted malts, falling into the Schwarzbier category. The beer is pretty malt heavy, which pairs well with the lager yeast to create a very smooth flavor. The beer also has a good amount of hops in it to balance out the malt, but not enough to overshadow the malt flavor in any way. The beer was released in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area last month, but if you can get a hold of a six pack it is definitely worth it to give this beer a taste.
Black Swan is a suspense/horror film directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, and Vincent Cassel. The film follows Portman’s character, Nina as she gets the lead role in Swan Lake at her ballet company. The pressure to perform as well as the fact that her new lead position is pushing a veteran dancer to the side, sparking rumors about a relationship with her instructor (Cassel), cause her to lose sight of reality and to distrust those around her, such as her mother and her understudy (played by Kunis).
I feel like Black Swan and Blackwing Lager are both remarkably balanced, with everything in them coming together perfectly to create a top notch final product. Black Swan mixes suspense and horror with psychedelic elements that meld into an experience that can be enjoyed over and over and still hold the audiences interest each time. Every viewing offers something that you may have missed previously. Similarly, multiple cans of Blackwing Lager can be enjoyed at any time without the taste becoming overbearing or monotonous. Enjoying these two together will offer nuances that will hold up time after time.
