breathe Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

  wide

  • Noah – While others might take the track record of Darren Aronofsky and immediately be on board for Noah, I really don’t see anything appealing here. It just looks very boring and generic to me. I would much rather Aronofsky be helming something as interesting and visually stunning as Black Swan or Requiem for a Dream. Now apparently this is more in line with The Fountain (which I haven’t seen), so if you’re a fan of that movie you’re more likely to feel similarly about Noah. It’s going to take a lot of great feedback for me to check out this biblical epic.
  • Sabotage – Normally I shit all over anything new that Schwarzenegger mumbles his way through, but I have only slightly more interest in this. David Ayer who most recently made the pretty good film End of Watch is also behind Sabotage. I enjoyed End of Watch quite a bit, but it’s not like Ayer’s previous track record is spotless (besides the rare gem of his Training Day script). Most of it is pretty generic action fare, and this will probably be categorized as such. I’m just saying there’s some potential in there. The plot follows a DEA task force who are targeted by the same drug cartel they busted… actually this is the same plot as End of Watch.

  • Breathe In– This film sees director Drake Doremus re-teaming with his Like Crazy star Felicity Jones. This time around she plays an exchange student who instead of falling for another student and starting a trialing long distance relationship, builds an increasingly troubling connection with her the father (played by Guy Pearce) in her home family. I really loved the direction and performances in Like Crazy put the plot never really went anywhere, so I am very interesting to see those same strengths with a more defined story. I think Jones is great, so I am especially excited to just check out her latest project.

  • The Raid 2 – I don’t even need to watch a trailer for this. I hope to watch this movie as soon as possible. It continues the storyline of the first movie, but that’s inconsequential because story is a ways down the list of important parts of this movie, following such components such as ridiculously awesome fight sequences, gore, direction, and relentless pacing. If this is more of the same I’m completely down.
