Time travel. It’s an interesting concept to say the least. The possibilities are as endless as to the years you could travel to. Where would you go? What would you do? What wrong would you right (or, what right would you wrong)? But perhaps just as interesting as the concept of time travel are the folks that do the act. Let’s take a look at five awesome movie time travelers.

Film Review Hot Tub Time Machine
5. The Hot Tub Time Machine Guys (Hot Tub Time Machine)
Adam (John Cusack) and the gang were just trying to relive their glory days by taking a trip back to their old stomping grounds, the Kodiak Valley Ski Lodge. But one drunken night later and they’ve mysteriously time traveled back to the ’80s via hot tub. That may be the coolest thing ever. The boys have to try and survive their teenage trip to the Kodiak Valley again (ya see, they traveled back in their old bodies), but the ’80s were more perilous than they remember. Will they return to the present or are they doomed to repeat the past?

time-haters
4. The Time Haters (Chapelle’s Show)
In Silky’s (Dave Chappelle) owns words: “We traveled all the way back through time…just to call you a cracker.” This may be one of the funniest things Dave Chappelle ever did. Silky and the other haters have somehow achieved time travel and they use it just to hate on people? Genius.

darko
3. Donnie Darko (Donnie Darko)
Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a very troubled teenager who’s also a superhero of sorts. He’s dealing with a convoluted tale about sleepwalking, giant rabbits, and alternate dimensions. Truth be told, Donnie only time travels once, but it’s in order to save the universe, so it’s a pretty big deal.

2. Cole (12 Monkeys)
Cole (Bruce Willis) is a prisoner in a virus-ravaged future, who is continually sent back in time to try and uncover the source of the virus that wiped out most of humanity. His trips through time are usually pretty terrible, whether he’s being institutionalized with a crazy Brad Pitt or pulling his own teeth out in order to possibly avoid detection (or not…we never really know how crazy Cole himself is).

1. Marty McFly and Doc Brown (The Back to the Future Trilogy)
You really can’t talk about one of these two without mentioning the other. Whether it’s back to the ’50s, the future, or into the old west, Marty and The Doc have time travel covered with the Delorean or the ELB Locomotive. They just have to watch out for the manure-hating Tannen family…

About Robert

Raised by movies and television, Robert is struggling to adapt to real society. He learned at an early age that his father is not a ghost that he can capture in a homemade Ghostbusters trap and that real life archaeologists are nothing like Indiana Jones after shadowing one while in high school. Robert channels his love of film through French Toast Sunday and the movies, music, and escapism website known as totheescapehatch.com. Robert lives - LIVES - in Florida, the weirdest state of them all.

  1. Great list, Rob! A lot of people seem to dislike Hot Tub Time Machine but I enjoy it a lot. It’s just goofy fun. Donnie Darko and 12 Monkeys I still need to see but Back to the Future is a well-deserved first spot. I’m a sucker for time travel in general, be it movies or anything else.

  2. Great list! Number one is indisputable… no one can lodge Back To The Future as number one! I was thinking about Groundhog Day.. but it doesn’t really count as time travel…
