anchorman   Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

wide

  • Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (on Wednesday 12.18.13)Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is simply that… legendary. It’s a modern comedy classic and one of the most quoted films ever. I should know.. my best friend/blogging partner Lindsay knows every line by heart and chastises me if I fail to place even the smallest of Anchorman references (which I duly accept). Did I need a sequel? Not at all. But maybe after watching this I will realize “OH MY GOD I DID NEED A SEQUEL!” I really hope so. I haven’t let myself anticipate this but I am ready to finally see if this movie was worth revisiting a film perfectly satisfying on its own.
  • Walking with Dinosaurs – When I was a kid, I adored The Land Before Time. They were cartoon dinos and that was very cute. I also adored Jurassic Park which featured terrifying dinos that serve as the top tier of special effects. I am not of the age to be excited about a film trying to match the cuteness of talking dinosaurs with effects under the bar of a film that is 20 years older.
  • Expanding this week: American Hustle, Saving Mr. Banks, Inside Llewyn DavisDINOS

limited

  • Her (on Wednesday 12.18.13) – This certainly seems like an odd, offbeat story that Spike Jonze could bring to the screen perfectly. It just also looks quite sad, despite it being nominated in the comedy section of the Golden Globes. I’ve heard so many raves that I am very curious to see this film. Off the bat the cast had me hooked—Joaquin Pheonix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, and Olivia Wilde are all great. Throw in Chris Pratt and Sam Jaeger (for the Parenthood fans) to really clinch my viewing. And on top of all that you have Scarlett Johansson in what’s likely her most interesting performance so far in her career. I’m excited to see what she brings to screen with just her voice work. If she hooked a Supporting Actress nom at the Oscars it would be all the more impressive.
