Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.

Out-of-the-Furnace-vert
Instead of Out of the Furnace, watch: The Departed
Out of the Furnace seemed to come out of no where but the cast and trailer certainly have my attention. If you couldn’t make it out to the theater to see the thriller you should try revisiting Martin Scorsese’s Oscar winning film The Departed. A remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, Scorsese’s film is reimagined with a Boston setting, filled with corruption, gangsters and lots of F bombs. The story itself is the ultimate exersice in twists and turns and with a cast that features Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga, and Alec Baldwin how can you not be interested? Will I watch this movie at home this week? Maybe…maybe not…maybe go fuck yourself. [Out of the Furnace trailer] / [The Departed trailer]

Big Tom Hanks
Big: 25th Anniversary Edition (2012)
Big is one of those truly rare films that could be so close to being awful but manages to pull everything off. It’s essentially a body switching comedy, where 13 year Josh Baskins momentarily wishes he was 30 years old only to be completely surprised when his wish comes true. Thanks in large part to a terrific performance from Tom Hanks, the movie succeeds as a touching and funny comment of the cynicism, responsibility and pitfalls of becoming an adult.

FLIGHT
Flight (2012)
A fantastic find for Netflix Instant Watch, Flight is a story about addiction helmed by the always first rate Denzel Washington. I experienced a few bumps with the overall production of the movie but was really taken with the film’s handling of the subject matter. Few movies exist in the alcohol addiction sub sub genre that feel as authentic as Flight. You can read more of my thoughts on the film in my initial review here.

Flight Netflix Synopsis: After his amazing safe landing of a damaged passenger plane, an airline pilot is praised for the feat, but has private questions about what happened. Further, the government’s inquiry into the causes soon puts the new hero’s reputation at risk.
