nebraskaHere to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

  wide

  • The Best Man Holiday – Taye Diggs AND Morris Chestnut in one movie? I’m going to need a fan just to get through this trailer. I haven’t seen The Best Man but this cast doesn’t seem to have even aged in the past 14 years. I might be missing some of the jokes in the trailer from not knowing how the last movie played out, but it still looks pretty funny. I’d like to check both of these movies out, maybe not in theaters but they seem worth the watch.

  • Nebraska – Alexander Payne is fantastic at this character portraits and the reception on this one has been great. I like the less flashy cast that Payne apparently fought for (along with the black & white) and I appreciate that this seems to very much be the film he wanted to make. The trailer doesn’t really excite me necessarily, but I think the concept feels ripe for that personal style of humor that Payne is so good at.

  • Charlie Countryman – This looks like it could be a fun watch or just be trying a little too hard. The trailer is sort of riding that line but the reviews aren’t great. This is the movie that Shia LaBeouf got shit for actually taking acid during a tripping scene. He still looks decent in the film though, plus there’s Evan Rachel Wood and Mads Mikkelsen in the other lead roles. This film was originally called The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman until it was shortened, but it seems to be giving an obvious impression of where this plot is going. I guess it depends on the film if it’s well done or just a gimmick.
