howilivenowHere to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

  wide

  • Thor: The Dark World – I’ll have a review up later this week, but this is a pretty good entry into the Marvel cinematic universe. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first Thor film, but liked his character well enough in The Avengers. This sequel has a fairly fun concept and more of the likeable relationship dynamics of Thor and Loki. If you’re into that then I think you’re in for a treat.
  • About Time – I am a huge Love Actually fan and I am always up for some romantic fair above the level of the crap rom-com’s that come out far more regularly than anything worth watching. I really like Rachel McAdams and even though this is the third romantic film she’s in dealing with time travel and memory loss,  but this one certainly looks the best. Early reviews have been really positive so I’m looking forward to checking it out.

  • How I Live Now – Wow, Saiorse Ronan looks really stunning in this. The direction by Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) looks beautiful as well. After her poorly received efforts earlier this year, The Host and Byzantium it’s nice to see this getting some positive feedback. This is based on young adult novel about a young girl falling in love for the first time in the midst of a military state. I hope it’s as stylish as the trailer makes it seem.

  • A Case of You (opens 11.06.13) – So this looks like a corny romantic comedy, but it stars Justin Long and Evan Rachel Wood and has Busy Phillips and Peter Dinklage. It’s about a writer who completely fakes his personality and interests to land a dream date but then has trouble revealing his true self when things get serious. It sounds like a super trite concept but the cast makes me want to give it a shot.
