blue Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

wide

  • The Counselor – This movie looks wild. I am not quite sure what’s going on, but I like whatever it is that I’m seeing. And have you seen my “About” section recently? I (along with most others with eyes) cannot get enough of watching Michael Fassbender. Give me a video of him making a sandwich, throw in a smile, and I’ll watch that on a loop. He’s played a variety of characters but this still seems like something different, so I’m excited to check The Counselor out. Plus it’s based on a Cormac McCarthy novel and those adaptations haven’t disappointed me yet.
  • Bad Grandpa – On paper this idea seems like a lame cash in. I was all set to dismiss it until I saw the trailer. Taking the Borat approach to this Jackass spin off could be great fun. There were some deep belly laughs to be had from the trailer, but there is always the fear that all the funny parts were in that edit. It would kind of suck if there were no big surprises from the rest of the movie, but if the whole thing is as full of laugh out loud moments then I’ll be a fan.

  • Blue is the Warmest Color – This Palme d’Or winning film is about two young French girls who enter a relationship that leads to the one’s sexual coming of age and their ongoing romance. It sounds like a little told perspective and features two wonderful lead performances. With the glowing critical response this looks to be one of the biggest foreign films of the year and I am eager to check it out.

  • All Is Lost – This movie, and especially Robert Redford, look pretty fantastic. This stripped down survivor story seems like a great follow up to Gravity. The sense of hopelessness and isolation is going to feel similar, but this film apparently features little dialogue at all. It’s going to be a different sort of stranded in the middle of nowhere tale, but I have very high hopes.
