macheteHere to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

wide

  • Machete Kills – I loved the first Machete. It was hilarious, weird, and badass. The B-movie vibe was on point and Danny Trejo was in the role of his life. This one just feels a little too late and a little too on point. I don’t want a rehash of the first by any means. If you have a good thing, don’t ruin it. Then again there is Lady Gaga, Amber Heard, and Carlos Estevez to give me a little itch to check it out. I probably wouldn’t spend the money on it, but I’ll give it a shot at some point.
  • Captain Phillips – I am pretty excited to check this out. I love Paul Greengrass’s style and Tom Hanks is overdue for one of his vintage lead performances (although I loved him Cloud Atlas). Early reviews have been fantastic so I’m optimistic. I hope it’s not too heavy handed with any melodrama and handles the cultural differences with the right amount of nuance. It could be the best one of the best movies of the year if it can balance all those elements well.

limited

  • Romeo and Juliet – Sure there’s already 9 other versions of this story on film, but hey there are some attractive young actors today that really need to put their own stamp on it! ..Except there’s nothing new or original going on in this film it seems. At least Baz Luhrmann had the decency to do something wildly new with the story. Joss Whedon did earlier this year with Much Ado About Nothing. It’s just a very unnecessary movie, so even if it’s great I’m not sure if I’ll find much need to seek it out.

  • All The Boys Love Mandy Lane – I’ve actually seen this one already considering it’s 7 years old at this point. I’m not sure why the studio has finally decided to release it but I suppose it’s worthy of a watch if you’re seeking out a Halloween feature. It’s your standard teenage slasher. It’s got some interesting parts but I wouldn’t call it required viewing.

  • Escape From Tomorrow – What is this madness? This looks like the weirdest movie out this year (the same year as Spring Breakers might I remind) and I can’t wait to check it out. The guerilla style filmmaking was enough to get me interested but this just looks so bizarre that I need to know what the hell is going on. I’m just glad the speculation that Disney might let this film see the light of day didn’t pan out.
