As a beer lover, I often find myself selecting out a brew to fit my mood. And as a movie lover, most of the time the two go hand in hand. So I decided to share some pairings of film and beer that I think go great together. Take a look at my pick of the month and hopefully you will enjoy it.

Sixpoint Brewery operates out of Brooklyn, New York. Their full line is cans only, most of them are in 16oz cans so you get a full pint per container. Maybe best known for their cream ale, Sweet Action, many of their brews are interesting, nontraditional versions of established styles. The current seasonal style in stores for the summer is Apollo. Apollo is a Bavarian Wheat beer with yeasty flavors and faint citrus notes. It’s very refreshing and perfect for summer months.

Apollo 13

Directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Gary Sinise, Apollo 13 is a Best Picture nominated movie that follows the flight of the Apollo 13 space shuttle. The film depicts the crew attempting NASA’s would-be third moon landing until the ship suffers an explosion that results in a loss of most of the oxygen supply and a limiting of the ship’s power. The crew in the shuttle and on the ground struggle to get the ship back to Earth without any casualties.

Apollo 13 was a big summer movie when it was released in June of 1995. The film does a good job at creating a pretty tense atmosphere, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a few beers on hand while watching it. If you’re watching the summertime I would recommend Sixpoint Apollo. The tall cans will come in handy in easing tension and cooling you off. Apollo could easily become a beer that you crave during the heat of summer. Even though the cans are larger, it shouldn’t be any trouble having 2-3 at a time.
