Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the man responsible for the 2009 runaway success Zombieland, Gangster Squad is witty, intelligent and classy. The star studded cast includes the likes of movie heartthrob, Ryan Gosling, Superbad (2007) star Emma Stone, Hollywood A-lister Sean Penn and TV star Mireille Enos.
The establishing shot sets the scene for the audience: a broken 1940’s version of LA, ruled by gangsters who have a strangle-hold of corruption over the police force, a place where the rat-at-at-at of a Tommy gun echoes through the streets and bombings are an everyday occurrence.
When a new mob boss, one from Miami, decides he wants to be the big boss in town and starts sending in his boys to scope out the scene, from this new threat a group of renegade cops form in an attempt to keep the city safe. The East-coast mafia types do not take the resistance lightly and a showdown is ushered in to establish who really runs the town.
