Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.

Instead of Alex Cross: Kiss the Girls

This is an easy one. Morgan Freeman is obviously a better Alex Cross than Tyler Perry could ever be and this take on the character is more of a who done-it detective than action cop guy. Who doesn’t like a 90’s crime thriller especially on a lazy afternoon when you don’t feel like catching a matinee? In this one, Freeman and Ashley Judd are on the hunt for a serial kidnapper and killer of women who is one nasty fellow.

Instead of Paranormal Activity 4: The House of the Devil

Okay so this might be sort of a stretch, but they’re both about creepy happenings that take place in a house. Truth is I just saw The House of the Devil for the first time recently and I just think it’s the perfect Halloween movie if you want to skip the fourth installment in the Paranormal Activity series. It’s about a college student who takes a babysitting job despite all evidence that it’s not a very good idea. You’re not quite sure what is going on in the film until it knocks the wind out of you. Ti West’s throwback slow burn 70’s horror direction and great performances by Jocelin Donahue and Greta Gerwig amongst others make this a fantastic watch.

Savages (2012)

This might be more of a rental depending on how willy-nilly you are with your home collection. This wasn’t necessarily a must see in the theater (read Nick’s and my different takes on the film) but I think it’s definitely worth checking out. It’s a pretty fun movie and has some awesome moments and performances that entertain you throughout. If you don’t have the highest of expectations this is a pretty inoffensive choice for a watch on DVD even if it is about violent drug cartels and polyamorous relationships.

Carrie (1976)

Sure there is a remake coming out but that’s not due out until March and Halloween is days away. Besides this is a classic and the perfect movie for the season. Sissy Spacek is disarmingly creepy and Brian De Palma’s direction makes this one of the scariest high school movies that will make your teenage years seem like a cakewalk.

Carrie Netflix Synopsis: Mousy teen Carrie White may be ostracized, but she has the ability to move objects with her mind. When the high school “in crowd” torments her with a sick joke at the prom, she lashes out with devastating and deadly power.

What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
