For geeks like me, it’s pretty exciting to hear when Simon Pegg has a new project coming out. And even though his film A Fantastic Fear of Everything has already opened in the UK (and to less than positive reviews) the movie stills that have surfaced recently are still drawing my attention. Has anyone out there already seen the flick? Thoughts?

It’s funny because I was JUST talking about this the other day. When are they going to spoof the Paranormal Activity franchise? Well, Marlon Waynes and Cedric the Entertainer aren’t wasting any more time with the idea and are currently developing the movie.

I really didn’t know a whole lot about the film Red Lights when I came across it in the horror news but finding out that it’s directed by the guy that did Buried and it stars Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, and Robert De Niro made me do my homework.

The Tall Man
Directed by Pascal Laugier. Starring: Jessica Biel, Jodelle Ferland and Stephen McHattie.

There are a lot of people shouting about this trailer, saying it’s boring and disappointing. I assume that’s largely due to the fact that The Tall Man’s director Pascal Laugier is best know for the gore soaked film Martyrs. Obviously The Tall Man doesn’t have many similarities between that film, but that’s a plus for me. I’m probably in the minority when I say that I think this trailer displays some genuinely intriguing tension. It keeps the mystery short, which I dig, and hints at the idea that something really sinister is going on behind the scenes. I could be off and this film could be a dud but I actually want to give this a chance and find out. Or I don’t know, maybe I just want to see Jessica Beal succeed at something.

The Awakening
Directed by: Nick Murphy. Starring: Rebecca Hall, Dominic West and Imelda Staunton

This looks like a lovely little creeper. I have a feeling the film might be leaning a bit more towards the thriller/drama genre but that certainly isn’t a bad thing. Again, there’s no harm adding Rebecca Hall into the mix who I can easily fall in love with any time she’s on screen. Maybe this film can work to help get the bad taste of The Woman In Black out of my mouth.

Compliance
Directed by: Craig Zobel. Starring: Ann Dowd, Dreama Walker, Pat Healy.

A film that could easily slip into the classification of exploitative, Compliance is packing a hidden punch: the true story. While it looks like audiences could easily write this film off as nonsense, it is downright horrifying when you take a look at the real life events. Obviously the film is a work of fiction, but if you read up on the true crime it was based on I think you will have a completely different outlook on what is possible. Nick reviewed this movie during his coverage of the Maryland Film Festival and noted that the film’s effect was quite powerful.

Entity
Directed by: Steve Stone. Starring:  Dervla Kirwan, Charlotte Riley and Branko Tomovic.

I can’t stress enough how off putting the found footage feel is starting to become. Though, I have tried to overlook it as much as possible recently because it seems unavoidable. Beyond that annoyance, the trailer does give me a bit of other interesting elements. I can get down with the haunted house vibe, and the over all tone of the trailer feels like there is dread lurking in the serenity of an untouched landscape. But there isn’t a lot else to focus on or set it apart from other paranormal endeavors. More likely than not, the film will get lost in the shuffle of a Netflix queue.

Bait 3D
Directed by: Kimble Rendall. Starring: Phoebe Tonkin and Sharni Vinson.

Who the hell took a look at Shark Night 3D and thought “Why don’t we have more of this?” Apparently the creators of Bait 3D, that’s who. There’s not anything noteworthy here, even on the campy side of the film, other than the scene where the annoying lap dog gets devoured.

Fear Itself

By: Whitestone Motion Pictures

This is a really cute short that works as a nice exercise in suspense. The homage to Hitchcock is obvious from the opening credits and the rest of the short keeps the level of style up high. Give it a watch and enjoy a nice break from the daily youtube sludge.
