It’s safe to say that if you’re on this site or you listen to the podcasts, you love movies. The sad thing about movies is you can’t always watch or hear them. With the advancement of technology, we can stream them online via our computers and tvs, we can watch them from our phones, and best of all, we can watch them on the silver screen and enjoy their cinematic splendor. But let’s be honest; it’s summertime. Most people are going out to the beach, enjoying a night on the town, taking road trips, and a vast majority will take a family vacation somewhere. All of these things are missing one thing: movies! So I’m here to help you seek out movie soundtracks that truly make your summer a cinematic one.

This week: Summer Sing-a-longs

Rock of Ages // Various Artists
All right hear me out. French Toast Sunday is dedicated to bring you fresh and unpretentious film talk. Whether you like the film or not is up to you, but the music, at least some of it, is enjoyable. I’m not big into 80s music, but it’s constantly played on the radio and it’s incredibly catchy. This might come across as nothing but celebrity karaoke sure, but a few tracks stand-out and will have you sing along with them. It’s great for road trips when you just gotta sing. Or maybe you’re at a beach bonfire and you’re looking for the right song to set the mood. No matter your occasion and no matter the group size (though we prefer groups of six) this soundtrack will have you singing, playing your air guitar, and enjoy the memories you make.

Highlights: Shadows of the Night/Harden My Heart, Anyway You Want It, Don’t Stop Believin’

Take Me Home Tonight // Various Artists
Maybe you’re looking for something more 80’s pop? This soundtrack has artists ranging from Duran Duran to NWA to Men Without Hats. It’s perfect if you’re in a car with friends singing a long or you need a way to start your 80’s Themed Dance Party (though we here at FTS do not condone those, but we do condone 80s Movie Marathons) Many of the classics are here and sung by the original artists which may be more appealing than other soundtracks (such as Rock of Ages or Mama Mia). With songs so catchy (Come On Eileen, Straight Outta Compton, and Don’t You Want Me) it’s hard not to sing-a-long and look like a total fool. So take this soundtrack home with you today and get ready to sing all day and all of the night.

Highlights: Come On Eileen, Safety Dance, Straight Outta Compton

The Rocky Horror Picture Show // Various Artists
Many states have old independent theatres that screen cult classics at midnights on Friday and Saturday. If you have one of these, many of you know that The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a staple. It’s camp, the dialogue is ridiculous, the acting is great, and the musical numbers stand out. Catchy, ludicrous, and danceable (yes, I can remember doing the Time Warp), the music is original and definitely fun to sing-a-long too. I’ve been to a few parties down in New Orleans where they had the film projected on a while and whenever the musical numbers happened, many people would throw their drinks take the center of the room and sing and dance along. It’s a fun soundtrack and a great way to warm up for any midnight screenings.

Highlights: Science Fiction/Double Feature, Hot Patootie/Bless My Soul, Time Warp
