  1. I’m going to say David Fincher’s 2011 adaptation. Much darker than the 2009 version look, feel, and soundtrack wise. The 2009 followed the book’s intricate details a bit more and the “assault” scene was a pinch more disturbing, I found myself really taken back by Fincher’s adaptation.

  2. Ah, this. I’ve already been back and forth between the two countless times, and come to the conclusion that it’s physically impossible for me to chose one over the other. But between you and me, if you put a gun to my head, I will say the 2009 version. For one simple reason: Noomi Rapace.

  3. I’m going to argue that the original story isn’t all that interesting to begin with, and doesn’t warrant one film adaptation (let alone two). …but you can’t really get a much better made film than one David Fincher is going to make, so that one.

  4. I love all these comments to far because they pretty much represent all three sides of the GWTDT debate I have come across so far: 1) Fincher’s adaptation was a better made film, 2) Noomi just kills it so 2009 wins or the other option 3) The source material/story doesn’t even deserve the all attention it’s getting.

For me, as most people probably already know, I am 100% in Fincher’s boat as I found almost everything superior in his adaptation. Does anyone else want him to complete the trilogy??

  5. Fincher’s version was really good and compelling but Mara’s Lisbeth never really held a candle to the intensity of Rapace. Maybe that was a good thing making her more vulnerable as Rapace is a tough act to follow. Good on Fincher for making his version a just a bit different…other than that it’s a near doppleganger. Hard for me to chose too but I like the original.

  6. Total toss-up, in my opinion. I might give the slight edge to Fincher’s version simply because of the killer soundtrack, but I loved Noomi Rapace in the 2009 movie.

  7. I picked Fincher’s version hands down. Watching the Swedish version the only thing that I found myself impressed with was Noomi. She is undeniably awesome. But with Fincher’s there is so much more to like for me: Mara’s Lisbeth is also a fantastic portrayal and I love how nuanced her performance is, the overall cast, what Fincher showed vs what Oplev showed, the score, that breathtaking opening, and the overall tone & style. All of those qualities were so excellent, while the Swedish version has that made-for-TV feel to it that I just can’t praise all that much. I don’t think it’s a bad movie, but pales in comparison.
